What are Septic Tanks?
Septic tanks are used to store sewage water, and when held here it decomposes and drains away. They are designed to be underground, and we specialise in both septic tank repair and installation, so you can rest assured that you will be satisfied with our service. Read on to find out five key factors to consider when thinking about septic tanks installation.
Septic Tank System Design
A septic tank exists as part of a whole system, also consisting of the percolation area or discharge area. which is designed with your specifications in mind. The most basic consideration for designing your septic tank system is the number of people in a house, as this will relate to the size of your tank. Some installations may consist of a septic tank alone, as there may be direct discharge of treated effluent into a drain or stream. In these cases, it would be likely to install a sewage treatment plant rather than a septic tank. Generally, a septic tank installation would require a soakaway or percolation area. This is a gravel-based infiltration area, where treated effluent from the septic tank is dispersed and soaks into the soil.
Choosing Your Septic Tank
Septic tanks are usually made from concrete or plastic. Whilst concrete tanks are strong, for installation they require a truck-mounted crane, and as lids are typically placed on the tank at the end of the installation process, they can lead to problems due to leakage on the joints. These days, it is preferred to use reinforced plastic as they offer the strength of concrete but they don’t carry the same risks of leaking.
Septic Tank Ventilation
Due to the nature of septic tanks, you may want to consider how you would like to deal with any odours. By ensuring you have proper ventilation, this can help to eradicate any potential odour issues. This could mean that you install vents at the ends of the percolation trenches, and you could use a soil vent stack at the property.
